Ohio law would mandate updated theme park ride availability

The state of Ohio is to hear a bill that would mandate theme parks to give real time information on which rides are available on a daily basis.

Ohio State Rep. Sean Patrick Brennan has tabled the Real-Time Ride Status Notification Act.

This would require theme park operators to update their websites with details of specific rides that are not operating on a daily basis.

Theme parks would also have to update onsite signage detailing which rides are closed.

The state is home to major theme parks including Kings Island and Cedar Point.

“Families spend hundreds of dollars and travel across the state to visit these parks. They deserve accurate, real-time information so they can plan their day,” Rep. Brennan said.

“This would avoid the frustration of walking across the park to find a ride shut down.”

This is a consumer protect issue, Rep. Brennan says, and many families plan days out at parks based on specific rides and attractions.

It passed, it would be enforced by the Ohio Department of Agriculture, which oversees safety inspections of theme park attractions.

Parks that do not update their ride availability would be fined.

The bill will go to committee first.

If it is signed into law it would become effective a year later, giving theme parks enough time to comply.
