A bus carrying up to 30 people has rolled over with one confirmed dead and several more injured near the tourist resort area of Airlie Beach in Queensland.
The bus was en route from Airlie Beach to Proserpine when it crashed into a ditch, emergency services said.
A 19-year-old man died in hospital from head injuries while three other passengers are in a critical condition.
A further seven people are in a stable condition.
It is not yet clear why the bus, which was operated by Whitsunday Transit, came off the road at Cannon Valley.
"For whatever reason it left the roadway and has gone into the table drain and crashed on to its left-hand side. There is no indication of any other vehicles involved in the crash. We don’t know the reason why the bus has left the roadway," said police Inspector Steve O’Connell.
"It was a fairly chaotic scene in the early stages, the bus was on its side and you’ve got people pinned on that side of the bus that was on the ground. There were some very severe injuries, with a lot of blood."
The 70-year-old bus driver is one of the injured currently receiving treatment in hospital.
