Greentraveller’s Guide to Holidays in the North Pennines Area Outstanding Beauty launched

Green holidays website Greentraveller.co.uk and the North Pennines Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty (AONB) Partnership have published an online guide to show residents and visitors how to make the most of the region in a way that has a low impact on the environment and a positive impact on the local economy.

Greentraveller’s Guide to the North Pennines  features over 50 recommendations for where to stay, eat and what to do in the region, from the open heather moorland, vibrant hay meadows to the dramatic dales and traditional villages. It includes an interactive map of the featured businesses, a high-definition video celebrating the unique landscape, upcoming events, and in-depth information on how visitors can reduce their environmental impact by travelling to and around the area by public transport and by walking or cycling more.

Greentraveller’s team of professional travel writers has picked out some of the top places to stay, from renovated farmhouses, award-winning B&Bs and cosy cottages that have been accredited by the Green Tourism Business Scheme – a national award for green tourism businesses. The Guide also features some of the best spots to find local produce, as well as family days out at gardens and museums, and a range of outdoor activities including cycling on 18th century packhorse trails, canoeing, boating and sailing at the Talkin Tarn Country Park, fantastic birdwatching, and species-rich hay meadows.

Richard Hammond, Chief Executive of greentraveller.co.uk, said:

"The North Pennines AONB is a very special part of England. As well as a very proud industrial heritage, it is home to one of the rarest grassland habitats in the country, and some world-class natural attractions, including High Force, England’s biggest waterfall, and High Cup Gill, a stunning glaciated valley on the North Pennines escarpment."

"We hope this Greentraveller Guide to the North Pennines will help residents and visitors make the most of their time in this stunning part of the country, in a way that brings local economic benefits while conserving the very special landscape."

"This Guide is the latest of our online destination platforms for specific regions in the UK, including other Areas of Outstanding Natural Beauty (AONBs) and National Parks that are proving popular with holidaymakers looking for that special local touch."

The guide has been part funded by the AONB Partnership’s Sustainable Development Fund and developed with the support of the AONB team.

Chris Woodley-Stewart, Director of the North Pennines AONB Partnership, commented:

"We’re delighted to have been able to work with Greentraveller.co.uk to give a boost to sustainable tourism businesses in the North Pennines. Many have pulled out all the stops to ‘green’ their operations and link their businesses to the high quality of the landscape and wildlife in the AONB. Taking this opportunity to reach new potential visitors in partnership with Richard’s team is a great use of our Sustainable Development Fund."

"The North Pennines is a fabulous UK destination for walking, cycling, horse riding, wildlife watching and a wide variety of other activities. The Greentraveller guide puts it all together for the visitor – green accommodation, places to eat and drink, events and activities, local produce and products – it’s all there."
