Operators act to assist Brits as Hurricane Wilma approaches
Around 8,500 British holidaymakers in Mexico face the prospect of being in the path of Hurricane Wilma.
ABTA confirmed the numbers saying that tour operators are monitoring the situation closely and will inform passengers of any alterations on a day-to-day basis.
The category four hurricane is due to hit the Mexican Yucatan peninsula in the next 24 hours although forecasters are unclear as to exactly where Wilma will head next, ABTA said.
The association said: “ABTA tour operators are currently working to ensure the safety and comfort of their customers in destinations vulnerable to the storm.
“In Mexico, Cuba and some areas in south west Florida including the Keys, holidaymakers are following local authorities’ guidance on moving to shelters and safe areas.”
Meanwhile, holidaymakers who were travelling to Mexico today with Federation of Tour Operators’ members have been offered alternative holiday destinations.
Other programmes to Cuba and Florida are currently operating normally.
Normal booking conditions apply to all holidays, ABTA said.
Go to www.nhc.noaa.gov, www.visitflorida.com/cms/index.php/id=2103, and www.fco.gov.uk for information on the hurricane.
