Aviation Authority officials have given the green light to Orlando International Airport’s billion dollar expansion plans.
The Greater Orlando Aviation Authority approved the $1.8 billion project for the new south terminal complex, measuring 2.7 million square feet.
It will include up to 24 new gates, a six-story parking garage and ground transportation works.
It will be able to accommodate both international and domestic passenger traffic, the airport authority said.
Funding for the south terminal complex will come from several sources," GOAA executive director Phil Brown said in a statement.
"A combination of grants, Aviation Authority funds, bonds and passenger facility charges will be used to pay for this expansive and necessary project."
Work could begin next year and is expected to be operational by 2019.
OIA projects about 40 million passengers will pass through the airport this year.
