United Airlines is pulling out of Africa with the announcement it is ending its sole route to Lagos, Nigeria.
United will fly for the last time on the route on June 30, leaving Delta Air Lines as the only major US carrier serving Africa.
The Houston-Lagos is being dumped due to oil sector weakness and the Nigerian government’s restrictions in moving money out of the country.
Nigeria owes airlines about $575 million in air fares, according to the International Air Transport Association.
"Repatriation has been a significant issue, as has been the downturn in the energy sector," said United spokesman Jonathan Guerin.
The route has been struggling financially for several years, United said, but was kept going for its importance to the Texas oil industry.
