Pact reached to expand UK-Russia air links
UK and Russian authorities have agreed to a major expansion of air services that could double the number of flights between London and Moscow.
Bmi will be permitted to operate alongside BA on the key Moscow route, with a maximum of 70 flights per week – double the current capacity. Each airline would be permitted 35 flights.
Manchester to Moscow slots would be increased to 14.
The agreement could also lead to a route expansion, including Birmingham and Liverpool to Moscow, London to Kaliningrad and Krasnoyarsk and London through Ekaterinburg and points beyond Russia.
UK carriers will also receive an increase in the number of services they can fly through Russian airspace on route to the Far East, while airlines from each country can now enter codeshare agreements.
To ratify the agreement, a new Air Services Treaty will be drawn up, replacing the existing 1957 pact.
