An emerging hot spot for North Florida is what locals call “The Corner,” the intersection that connects tiny Atlantic Beach (population: 15,000) with equally small Neptune Beach just south of Jacksonville.
There are something like 20 bars and restaurants in the area including Pete’s Bar, which was featured in the John Grisham book and film “The Brethren.” The bar is the oldest continuously operating tavern in North Florida and is famous for its 25 cent pool. Grisham often stays at nearby One Ocean Resort.
Many establishments have live entertainment.
The recently opened Palms Retro is so convenient that guest’s can park their car and get around town on a beach cruiser or walk to “The Corner,” said Hank Staley, who recently opened the 1950s-themed small hotel.
“I think we are seeing these requests as the property offers a unique product and it is very reminiscent of the Atlantic Beach vibe, which offers an authentic, non-tourism-created escape,” said Staley.
The hotel, which has rooms that are themed after 1950s stars such as Marilyn Monroe and Frank Sinatra, has only ten rooms.
He said the nostalgic, 10-room kitschy getaway, complete with an oversized relaxing courtyard, is a welcome reprieve from today’s traditional box hotels.
In celebration of the Palms Retro opening, a new vacation package, Some Like it Hot, is being offered. Midweek rates start at $89 per night per double occupancy or $119 per night on weekends.
