The Transportation Security Administration is now screening fewer than 100,000 passengers a day at the nation’s airports.
That marks’ a monumental 96% decline in average passenger traffic.
US airports normally see about 2.2 million travelers daily at this time of year.
The TSA says it has screened less than 100,000 for the past two days.
The last time average passenger traffic was below 100,000 a day was way back in 1954.
With wholesale travel restrictions, stay-at-home orders and mandatory self-quarantines in force, the air travel market has declined to just a trickle, with airlines slashing schedules by an average 71%, according to Airlines for America.
Flights that are still operating are only about 10% full, A4A says.
The TSA says more than 300 employees have tested positive for coronavirus and two have died.
