PATA UK upbeat on Asia travel recovery
There is real optimism at the Pacific Asia Travel Association the recovery is gaining momentum.
It follows a flurry of recent reopenings with Australia, Cambodia, Bali and the Philippines having all removed quarantine requirements for vaccinated tourists.
Vietnam will also open without quarantine, opening the whole of Indochina – Vietnam, Cambodia, Laos and neighbouring Thailand.
Chairman of the PATA UK & Ireland, Chris Crampton, said: “There is real cause for optimism,”
“However, the biggest barrier for travellers remains for those countries that require testing on arrival, which discourages visitors from travelling. Until we see more countries removing this stipulation, tourism to the region cannot fully recover.”
Other travel border reopenings include Sri Lanka, Maldives, India and Oman which have also removed all quarantine requirements for fully vaccinated visitors to test before or after arrival.
Malaysia is set to open on 1 April, followed by New Zealand in May.
“This all brings some much needed hope to so many of our friends and colleagues in the travel industry and gives the British public the confidence to go ahead and book a long-awaited holiday,” Crampton added.
“Speaking to some of our members, the consensus is that it finally feels like we are in the recovery phase of the pandemic and we can start planning again.”
This April sees PATA return to in-person Spring Quizzes for travel agents, with recently opened Australia as one of the participating suppliers:
On consecutive days between 25-27 April, events are held in Leeds, Manchester and Glasgow.
