Perth chaos another setback for Qantas
Just when you thought it couldn’t get any worse for Qantas, thousands of passengers across WA were left stranded after a severe lightning storm brought their operations at Perth Airport to a halt this week.
Compounding the PR disaster for Qantas, rival airlines managed to maintain their services with minimal delays and cancellations.
Frustrated passengers slept on floors, on tables and on baggage belts as they waited to board flights.
Many of the estimated 400 flights that operate daily in and out of Perth Airport were believed to have been disrupted by Tuesday’s lightning storm that stranded up to 18 planes on taxiways.
More than 3000 passengers were kept on board planes after landing, some for more than eight hours, after Qantas apron workers stuck to safety agreements that ensure they don’t work while lighting is in the area.
Qantas and other airlines operated extra flights to clear the passenger backlog, though Qantas claimed “infrastructure constraints” at Perth Airport limited its ability to operate more flights, the West Australian reported.
