UK: Company says average age will be 10 years less than on traditional ships

P&O has launched what it hopes will be a “new concept in sea travel” – a cruise ship that has no dress code and is aiming to attract younger passenger.

The 1,600-passenger Ocean Village was officially named by television “personality” Ulrika Jonsson yesterday at a ceremony in Southampton where she managed to get drenched in champagne – unintentionally of course! The Ocean Village, which will sail to Majorca today and start its first Mediterranean cruise next week, has no dressing-up policy in contrast to many other ships.

P&O says the average age of those on board will be some 10 years less than on traditional cruise ships. Managing director Nick Lighton said: “Our aim has been to give cruising a shot of adrenaline and a new sense of fun. The Ocean Village concept marks the biggest shake-up the industry has seen for decades. Decidedly less stuffy than traditional cruises, time on board the Ocean Village ship can be as chilled-out or as pepped-up as you want it to be.”

The ship will sail in the Med until October and will then spend the winter months in the Caribbean.
