P&O recognised for South Pacific efforts
LONDON – P&O Cruises’ work in developing sustainable tourism in the South Pacific has gained international recognition after being short-listed for a British award for excellence in tourism.
More than 60 submissions from around the world were received for the British Expertise International Awards.
P&O Cruises, in partnership with Hyder Consulting, was selected in the top three finalists in the category of Sports Leisure and Tourism Project of the Year and awarded a certificate by HRH The Duke of Gloucester.
The certificate was in acknowledgement for P&O Cruises’ industry leadership through its innovative work in supporting tourism in remote parts of Vanuatu in a way that delivers both environmental and economic benefit for the community.
As the region’s largest cruising company, P&O Cruises carries more than 150,000 passengers to the Pacific Islands each year. Vanuatu is one of the company’s key destinations.
The project includes:
– Building new amenities that collect rainwater and use solar-powered waste water treatment facilities.
– Working with the community to develop long-term skills in sustainable tourism.
– Identifying new eco-trails and signage to move tourists away from more sensitive coastal locations.
– Upgrading jetties for community and passenger use.
– Developing a new passenger education program to raise awareness of environmental sensitivities and cultural expectations in communities. The material will form part of onboard port talks and be included in port guides.
– Reviewing cruise ship operations, practices and procedures and investigating the condition of the reefs, marine life and shoreline as part of preparing baseline information for the future.
Director of Shore Operations John Nell said the project was being developed in partnership with local communities in Vanuatu.
Cruisinis contributing at least $35 million in direct economic benefit to the South Pacific but the overall benefit is believed to be upwards of $50 million through jobs and business activity.
