PONANT takes delivery of first hybrid electric polar exploration ship
PONANT has taken took delivery of Le Commandant Charcot, which is the first hybrid electric polar exploration ship powered by Liquefied Natural Gas.
It becomes the 13th vessel in the PONANT fleet.
“Delivery of Le Commandant Charcot is both a culmination and the beginning of a new kind of odyssey for the company. The construction of this prototype ship demanded extremely high standards in terms of quality. I am proud of the work that our teams have accomplished,” said Hervé Gastinel, CEO of PONANT.
The ship has 123 staterooms.
It is a Polar Class PC2 ship, comprising a range of ‘green’ technologies, such as 100% waste sorted on board and waste treatment.
Ship guests will have access to a host of activities including citizen science, expert lectures, kayaking, a hovercraft, hiking, ice fishing and more.
It is scheduled to sail in the world’s most remote regions, such as the North Pole, Northeast Greenland’s National Park, the Svalbard archipelago, the Bellingshausen Sea, and the Larsen Ice Shelf.
