President Bush outlines plan to deal with flu pandemic
US President George Bush outlined a $7.1 billion plan to cope with any future devastating flu pandemic.
“There is no pandemic flu in our country or in the world at this time, but if we wait for a pandemic to appear, it will be too late to prepare, and one day many lives would be needlessly lost because we failed to act today,” he said in a speech.
His plan to create a preventative vaccine and a stockpile of drugs to treat flu victims was obviously influenced by the deadly bird flu in Asia, which has been a scourge to migratory and domestic birds in Europe.
Wire services say there have been 122 known human cases with all involving people in close contact with infected birds.
The virus has not developed the ability to pass easily from person to person. If it does, the World Health Organization estimates it could kill two million to 7.4 million people.
