Prices fall ‘up to 52 per cent’ in aftermath of Spain travel ban
Prices for holidays in Greece, Turkey and Italy tumbled up to 52% in the two weeks following the government’s do-not-travel advice to Spain.
Data from TravelSupermarket showed the cost of trips to Greece and Turkey fell 28%, while a break in Italy was 52% cheaper compared to the fortnight before the travel ban.
The comparison site also found searches to Spain collapsed 80% in the aftermath of the FCO’s contentious decision to include the Balearics and Canary Islands in its travel warning.
Folllwing the decision, TUI increased capacity to Greece and Turkey after seeing a spike in demand as customers scrambled to make alternative plans.
But the overall fall in prices may reflect heightened nervousness among consumers at a time when fears are rising of a second wave of Covid.
JG Travel Group sales and marketing director Danny Crowe told TravelMole ealier this week that customers booked on coach tours to Italy in September "just don’t want to travel".
"They are not so worried about the health and safety on the coach, or the hotel, they’re worried about not being able to get home," he said.
Many would-be holidaymakers are understod to have now written off 2020 and are planning 2021 holidays.
Travelsupermarket said Greece was proving the most popular for 2020 travel, followed by Turkey, Italy, Malta and Croatia.
Departures in April and May 2021 were also in demand.
