Probe launched into near-catastrophe at New York's JFK airport

A crash between two passenger planes at New York JFK airport was prevented by the swift actions of an air traffic controller.

A Delta plane crossed runway 22 as a second Delta flight, to Bogota, was preparing to take off, which could have led to a catastrophic collision.

The planes were about 6,400 feet apart when Delta Flight 300 from St Maarten crossed the runway as it landed at JFK.

The controller intervened quickly and halted Delta Flight 253’s takeoff.

From recordings of ATC audio, it seems the pilot of Flight 300 failed to hold its position as per ATC instructions.

"We are currently investigating details of our JFK flight movements," Delta said.
