Puerto Rican shutdown not impacting tourists
The closing of public schools and shutting down of government offices has yet to deter tourists, according to the Puerto Rico Tourism Company (PRTC) officials.
“All efforts are being made to ensure safety for our visitors and to guarantee a secure and pleasant stay,” said Gonzalez Denton, executive director of PRTC.
He said airport facilities, hotels, restaurants and all tourist-used facilities remain open.
The government ran out of money this week when the legislature and the governor failed to reach an agreement on taxes and other issues.
All 1,600 public schools on the island closed and almost 100,000 government employees were put temporarily out of work. The government is Puerto Rico’s largest employer with about 200,000 workers.
Tourism, however, is among the country’s largest industries.
Since the legislature and the governor could not agree, Puerto Rico is operating under funds from a previous budget. The lay-offs were necessary because of a lack of government funds to pay workers. Some groups have led protest marches in recent days, but Puerto Rico officials say they are offering alternate routes to visitors who might otherwise be inconvenienced.
