Qantas’ international CEO leaving as overseas flights stay grounded
With regular scheduled overseas flights at a virtual standstill, Qantas’ international CEO Tino La Spina’s role is now surplus to requirements.
La Spina is leaving at the end of the month and his responsibilities will be taken on by Qantas Domestic CEO Andrew David.
"It’s increasingly clear that our international flights will be grounded until at least mid-2021 and it will take years for activity to return to what it was before," Qantas Group CEO Alan Joyce said.
"Under those circumstances, we’ve made the decision to consolidate the domestic and international business units under a single divisional CEO."
La Spina spent 14 years at Qantas and was previously chief financial officer.
Qantas has stood down about 20,000 staff and is permanently cutting 6,000 jobs as part of its company-wide recovery plan.
In its $1.96 billion loss reported for the 2020 financial year, Qantas International’s revenue was down more than 80%.
