Qantas may follow Air NZ lead

Monday, 21 Oct, 2005 0

Reports today suggest that Qantas may be looking to shed more than 3000 engineering and maintenance jobs in a cost cutting exercise similar to that announced this week by Air New Zealand.

It is understood that talks with unions are well underway with a view to widespread changes to work practices. Qantas is believed to be after a clean slate to re-negotiate workplace agreements. Both Virgin Blue and Jetstar have already demonstrated how outsourcing maintenace arrangements can save money.

Unions are understandably unhappy with the prospect of losing jobs claiming that safety and the quality of the work would suffer if taken offshore.
