Qantas staff and unions plan demo in London
Qantas staff and union leaders are planning a demonstration outside the Australian High Commission in London on Wednesday over their dispute with the airline.
They say the gathering is part of an international action day in response to the “near-crisis brought down on Qantas by the recent actions of its CEO”.
Qantas workers worldwide are being urged to hold rallies at Qantas offices and airports where the airline operates, wearing uniforms and using props and banners.
Unions say they are fighting for “guarantees on quality jobs, job security and fair wages while Qantas is potentially looking to cut labour costs by outsourcing overseas”.
Last month, Qantas shut down its operations in response to continued industrial action by its staff.
Following the shutdown, a 21-day period was set by national industrial tribunal for an agreement to be negotiated.
If an agreement is not reached the tribunal will step in to launch compulsory arbitration.
