Qatar Airways to disclose finances to ease US airline dispute

Tuesday, 30 January 20183 min read

After several weeks of negotiations with US officials, Qatar will agree to new disclosures about the financing of Qatar Airways.

Under an agreement to be announced Tuesday by U.S. Secretary of State Rex Tillerson, Qatar Air will release audited financial reports within a year and disclose all major new transactions with state-owned enterprises within two years.

According to Reuters the US and Qatar will release details of the understanding at a U.S.-Qatar meeting in Washington later today.

Qatar Airways also said it will not offer any ‘fifth freedom’ flights from a third country into the US.

It is a bilateral agreement that doesn’t involve UAE carriers Emirates and Etihad Airways, although US officials are planning separate talks with the UAE starting possibly by next week.

The US big three – Delta Air Lines, American and United – have been lobbying hard for direct action against the big three Gulf carriers over unfair subsidies from the UAE and Qatari governments.

Qatar Air, Etihad Airways and Emirates have steadfastly denied those accusations.
