Federal regulators are probing the landing of a US Airways jet which struck runway lights at the weekend.
The Airbus A321 damaged the underside of its tail trying to land at Charlotte, which the pilot attributed to wind shear.
The attempt was aborted and the plane made a turnaround and successfully landed without incident.
The Federal Aviation Administration said no injuries were reported to the 159 people aboard the flight which departed Atlanta.
During the initial attempt the plane reportedly touched down short of the runway.
The cockpit crew said the jet was hit with ‘wind shear’ just moments before.
Wind shear can occur when there is a sudden shift in wind direction close to the ground.
The runway at Charlotte was temporarily closed while debris was removed and the jet was taken out of service for repairs.
Parent American Airlines said it reported the incident to the FAA and the National Transportation Safety Board.
