Rome’s Trevi Fountain visitor fee takes effect

A visitor fee has now been implemented at Rome’s Trevi Fountain.

The €2 fee came into effect on Monday, and is designed to better manage crowds at the iconic tourist site.

The 18th century fountain is among the city’s most popular attractions.

International and domestic visitors have to pay the fee between the hours of 09.00 and 22.00. On Mondays and Fridays access is from 11.30.

Rome residents are exempt from the fee.

Om Monday, the first full day with the fee, about 5,000 visited.

Mayor Roberto Gualtieri said it creates ‘a more orderly experience, and overall an improvement in the quality of the visit to one of Rome’s most important monuments.’

The fee can be paid in advance online.

During peak days, it attracts as many as 30,000 visitors a day.

City officials said they forecast the fee will generate about €8.5 million a year.
