Royal Caribbean International is redeploying a ship from the US West Coast to become its 11th vessel to sail in Europe in 2011.
The 3,114-passenger Mariner of the Seas will operate seven-night Western Mediterranean and 12-night Mediterranean Holy Land and Mediterranean Egypt itineraries from Rome (Civitavecchia).
The Voyager-class ship is to sail in the Mediterranean between March and October 2011, replacing Splendour of the Seas, which will now depart on 10- and 11-night Greek Isles and Turkey itineraries from Venice.
Mariner of the Seas is being moved from running Mexican Riviera cruises from Los Angeles after its final departure on January 9, 2011.
The ship will then reposition from Los Angeles on a 16-night itinerary to Valparaiso, Chile, followed by a 14-night sailing that cruises the Straits of Magellan and Cape Horn at the southern tip of South America to Sao Paulo (Santos), Brazil. The ship will then offer a short Brazilian cruise season, before crossing the Atlantic to debut in Europe at its new seasonal homeport of Civitavecchia.
Mariner of the Seas will return to North America for the 2011-12 winter season, offering seven-night Western Caribbean itineraries from Galveston, Texas, replacing sister ship Voyager of the Seas, which is moving to sail the Caribbean from New Orleans.
Passengers booked on Mariner of the Seas’ Mexican Riviera sailings from January 16, 2011 can opt for a full refund or receive $200 on board credit on an earlier sailing or switch to sail to the Caribbean from Galveston. The line said changes to bookings need to be made by May 6.
Travel agents will receive a $50 bonus commission for rebooking affected clients. More information is available at www.RoyalCaribbean.com/MarinerOfTheSeasRedeployment.
The company said Mexican Riviera cruises have “traditionally been an important market for Royal Caribbean International, with the Port of Los Angeles and Mexican local, state and federal government agencies, and their private sectors playing a supportive role as valued partners”.
But it added: “While Royal Caribbean International looks forward to returning to the region in the future, Mariner of the Seas will sail its final round-trip Mexican Riviera itinerary from Los Angeles on 9 January 2011.”
Mariner of the Seas’ new 2011 Europe and South America, and 2011-12 Western Caribbean itineraries, Splendour of the Seas’ new 2011 Europe itineraries, and Voyager of the Seas’ new 2011-12 Western Caribbean itineraries will be opened for booking “in the near future”.
