Royal Caribbean plans to construct a cruise port in the Philippines according to a tourism department official.
The cruise line is mulling a purpose-built cruise terminal in Caticlan or Boracay, tourism undersecretary Benito Bengzon Jr. said, following the signing of an agreement this week.
"We are excited over the prospects of Royal Caribbean getting more involved in the development and promotion of Caticlan/ Boracay for cruise tourism. We are confident that the strategic partnership will result in more ships calling on Boracay, and pave the way for eventual home port operations," he said.
The line will finance construction.
"The Philippines is the future Caribbean of Asia," said the cruise line’s vice president for new commercial development John Tercek.
Boracay is the third largest cruise market behind Palawan and Manila.
A country of thousands of islands, the Philippines has big potential but is still a relatively small market due to the lack of port infrastructure.
It expects more than 100 port calls welcoming about 122,000 cruise passengers during 2017.
