Royal Caribbean Cruises Ltd has inked a joint venture agreement with Penang Port Authority to upgrade facilities at Georgetown’s Swettenham Pier Cruise Terminal.
The pier length will be extended by more than 200 metres to handle two mega cruise liners simultaneously and traffic management improvements will be made including adding space for tour buses.
The $35 million project will also improve accessibility for disabled and elderly passengers from ship to shore.
The partnership has full support from both State and Federal governments in Malaysia and Royal Caribbean will own a 40% stake in the venture.
Royal Caribbean is scheduled to make 38 port calls in Penang this year.
The terminal can currently handle up to one million passengers a year.
