Ryanair has confirmed it will be looking to bid for slots which are being freed up at London Gatwick as a condition of IAG’s take over of Aer Lingus.
Speaking at a press conference on Wednesday, Ryanair chief executive Michael O’Leary said it was certainly keen to expand its Gatwick flights and would be bidding for the slots.
As a condition of the deal, IAG has agreed to sell off five pairs of landing slots between Gatwick and Dublin and Belfast.
Aer Lingus is holding an extraordinary general meeting today to complete the sale after the European Commission gave approval yesterday.
Last week, Ryanair’s Board voted unanimously to accept the IAG offer for its 29.8% shareholding in Aer Lingus.
The Irish Government, which owned 25% of Aer Lingus, accepted IAG’s offer in May.
