Ryanair criticised by ASA over bonfire night advert

Wednesday, 4 February 20043 min read

Ryanair has reportedly been criticised by the Advertising Standards Authority for the use of an “expletive” in one of its adverts. According to the online news provider Ananova, the carrier placed an advertisement in the Daily Telegraph newspaper, to appear just before 5 November, which referred to its “Fawking great offers”. The advert drew some 47 complaints from readers. Ryanair reportedly argued that the advertisement was meant to be humorous, and that it did not think the use of the word would cause offence. The Daily Telegraph, for its part, said its readers would understand the use of the word; even so, the newspaper received 13 complaints. The ASA said the advert “was likely to cause serious or widespread offence to readers of the Daily Telegraph, and told Ryanair not to use the same approach again”.
