Ryanair grounds five planes
Ryanair has reportedly grounded a handful of its fleet of aircraft after discovering damaged bodywork.
The Times reports that the no-frills carrier has taken five planes out of service after finding scratches during routine maintenance checks; Ryanair technicians believe the scratches, which were probably caused by an “inappropriate procedure” when the planes were being painted eight years ago, could weaken the outer shell of the aircraft.
A spokesman for the airline reportedly told The Times: “On some aircraft it was more serious than others. It is like having a half-soft tyre on your car. Would you drive it or not? We are not prepared to take that risk.”
The aircraft will not be returned to service, the newspaper reports, because they would cost too much to repair. Grounding the planes will reportedly cost the carrier GBP3.6 million but its flight schedule will not be affected.
