Ryanair to open base in Sweden
Ryanair has announced it is to open its ninth European base at Stockholm’s Skavsta airport.
From 4 April 2003 Ryanair will base up to four Boeing 737-800 aircraft at Skavsta, operating more than 30 flights a day on six new international routes to Aarhus (Denmark), Glasgow, Hamburg, Paris, Oslo and Tampere (Finland), in addition to existing services to Stansted and Frankfurt.
Ryanair said it expected to carry over 1.5m passengers through Skavsta in its first year as a hub. One-way fares from the airport will start from SEK299 (£21).
The move will put further pressure on loss-making Scandinavian flag carrier SAS.
Announcing details of the new base, Ryanair’s chief executive Michael O’Leary, said: “Ryanair is breaking the monopoly of SAS in the Scandinavian markets of Norway, Finland, Sweden and Denmark – with choice and low fares which will save consumers over 84% on the SAS high fares.
“For years, visitors to the Stockholm area and Swedish consumers have had to put up with SAS’s high air fares, but this monopoly ends on 4th April 2003.”
