Ryanair welcomes easyJet acquisition of Go
Ryanair has welcomed the announcement by easyJet that it intends to consolidate with Go and Deutsche BA.
In a statement Ryanair said it “has long held the view that there would, in time, be consolidation in the European low fares market into two large operators Ryanair and easyJet.”
The company continued: “we welcome the consolidation of the enlarged easyJet group, which now means there are two large low fare airlines (one very low fare, and one ‘not so low’ fare), both of which will provide strong competition to the high fare rip off airlines such as British Airways, Lufthansa, Air France and others who for many years have been overcharging Europe’s consumers with expensive air fares.”
Ryanair’s chief executive, Michael O’Leary said: “I would like to pay tribute to Stelios, Ray and the rest of the easyJet team. Embarking on an acquisition of two other higher fare airlines at this time is certainly a ballsy move, and one which clearly establishes two big strong low fare carriers, to provide real competition and real choice with the high fare airlines all over Europe.
“We wish them well with these acquisitions, and I will be taking lessons in humility now that we are – for the time being – Europe’s second largest low fares airline. However since Ryanair’s fares and costs are some 60% lower than those of the enlarged easyJet group, we will still be the fastest growing and most profitable low fares airline, and we will continue to grow organically over time to become Europe’s largest scheduled airline.”
