Santa Cruz Boardwalk forced to close again amid rising Covid cases
The first major amusement allowed to reopen in California has been forced to close again after only one weekend.
The Santa Cruz Beach Boardwalk became the first theme park in the state to reopen last week but the local Covid infection rate has risen again in Santa Cruz, forcing an automatic closure.
Due to current transmissions, Santa Cruz County moved up to a tier 2 risk level, which is classified as ‘substantial risk.’
It had previously been a tier 3 moderate risk level, which allowed it to reopen at 25% capacity.
"While we are disappointed to close rides and attractions, we anticipated the likelihood Santa Cruz County might move back and forth within the tiers and have prepared to adjust our operations accordingly," Santa Cruz Beach Boardwalk spokesperson Kris Reyes told the Mercury News.
"The health and safety of our guests and employees is of the utmost importance during these challenging times."
The Boardwalk was open at the weekend for guests with pre-reserved two-hour slots for all outdoor rides, and tickets were restricted to Santa Cruz County residents only.
The big California theme parks like Disneyland are still closed and will only be given approval to reopen when Orange County reaches a tier 4 minimal risk level.
