The EU Commission is considering re-introducing internal border checks in Europe for up to two years under plans to tackle the migrant crisis.
The move would effectively suspend the 30-year-old Schengen Zone, which some countries also want to be redrawn to exclude Greece in order to prevent asylum seekers arriving from Turkey travelling to other parts of Europe.
Currently there are 26 countries in the Schengen Zone, where people can move freely across borders without the need to show their passports, regardless of their nationality.
The proposals to reintroduce the border checks were put forward at a meeting of European leaders on Monday and will be discussed further by Europe’s leaders next month.
