Schiphol reopens after Nazi-era bomb find scare

Amsterdam’s bustling Schiphol Airport’s Pier C was evacuated for hours on Wednesday causing ripples of delays through European airspace while workers unearthed and removed a suspected World War II-era bomb near the airport’s main terminal.

The BBC reports that the 500 kg bomb was discovered while construction workers were digging near Pier C—an area that was a Nazi military airfield during World War II.

Massive delays were reported after the hours-long closure but the bomb was safely detonated and air traffic has now resumed.

The Schiphol World War II bomb was found on the same day as a similar 250 kg bomb that was found in the German city of Munich. That bomb was detonated on site and caused several large fires in adjacent neighborhoods.

Britain’s Daily Mail newspaper reported on Wednesday that the finding of a live bomb beneath one of Europe’s busiest airports would spark a "major enquiry" from security experts.
