'Scuffles' as UK airport arrivals hit by IT glitch

Thursday, 1 May 20143 min read

It’s been a bad 24 hours for international airline passengers with disruptions at a number of UK airports following an IT glitch.

And in Los Angeles, flights were grounded for more than an hour Wednesday due to a computer failure at an air traffic control facility, the Federal Aviation Administration said.

UK airports, including Heathrow and Gatwick, saw lengthy queues forming after a fault on UK Border Force computers.

Staff had to input passport details manually rather than simply scan documents. Non-EU passengers were worst affected.

Heathrow said the most disruption was at Terminal 4 and at Terminal 3, used by Qantas.

Passengers at Gatwick tweeted that fights were breaking out in queues stretching "for miles".

At Luton airport police were called to deal with ‘scuffles’ in the immigration hall but no arrests were made.

Dover, Southampton and other UK ports were also affected.
