Search called off after man overboard near Kent
A major search operation has now been called off without success after a man overboard incident off the Kent coastline.
The man overboard was a crew member from the AIDAperla cruise ship who was reported missing early on Sunday.
“The captain and crew of AIDAperla immediately initiated all necessary rescue measures in close coordination with the local authorities,” AIDA Cruises said.
The ship returned to the likely position of the incident while HM Coastguard helicopter and lifeboat crews from Ramsgate and Dover searched the area.
The ship was cruising from Hamburg, Germany to La Coruna, Spain.
After about 10 hours searching a 20 mile stretch of water, it has been called off.
It is not expected to resume on Monday.
The ship has resumed its voyage to Spain.
