Search suspended after woman falls overboard ferry
The search for a woman believed to have fallen overboard from a ferry en route to Dorset has been called off.
Lifeboats and aircraft were used to search for the woman after the alarm was raised on the Condor Rapide Fast Ferry last night as it made its way from Guernsey to Poole in Dorset. The ferry also changed its course to assist.
Portland Coastguard suspended the search at 22:00.
Nigel Robson, Portland Coastguard Watch manager, said: "We have searched the route of the ship and the areas where our search planning expertise indicate a person might have been carried by the tide.
"Sadly, we have found no-one.
"It’s now been five hours since the person was reported missing and because of the water temperature and difficulty of searching in the dark, we have now called off the search."
The service involved had begun its journey at Jersey and had departed from Guernsey at 16.15. It was due to arrive in Poole at 19:15.
A message on Condor Ferries’ website said: "The passenger was unable to be found and the Pan Pan was upgraded to a Mayday. A further update will be issued, when more information is available."
Condor Ferries operates a year-round service connecting the UK through Poole, Weymouth and Portsmouth, the Channel Islands through Guernsey and Jersey and the ports of St Malo and Cherbourg in France.
