Second UK operator drops excursions following Egypt suicide bomb

A second British tour operator has cancelled trips from Red Sea resorts to St Catherine’s Monastery following the fatal bombing of a tour bus earlier this week.

Hayes & Jarvis said it had instructed its ground handler Travco to cancel excursions to the monastery, which is a World Heritage Site.

It follows Thomas Cook’s decision earlier this week to stop selling excursions to the monastery to guests staying at hotels in Sharm el Sheikh and Hurghada.

Three tourists from South Korea were killed in the explosion – believed to be a suicide bomb – which happened in Taba, South Sinai close to the Egyptian/Israeli border. They were all members of a Christian tour group on a trip through Turkey, Egypt and Israel.

The Foreign Office is now advising against all but essential travel to South Sinai, except for the area within the Sharm el Sheikh resort areas.

Meanwhile, Egyptian minister of tourism, Hisham Zaazou, said a reported threat to tourists by the terrorist group responsible for the attack on Sunday was "not credible".

In a statement, Hayes & Jarvis said: "We will continue to follow respective Foreign Office advice and at this point the overall level of advice for Egypt has not changed."
