Security top concern for travellers
Even intrepid travellers rate security as a top priority, says Wanderlust editor-in-chief Lyn Hughes.
Commenting on the results of the recent Wanderlust Annual Awards, Ms Hughes said safety is becoming increasingly important to travellers, including Wanderlust readers, who number around 100,000 from 112 countries and are considered to be among the world’s most intrepid travellers.
The magazine was surprised to see the Foreign and Commonwealth Office receive the award for top travel website, climbing from ninth place last year. “This is a reflection of increased safety awareness. The FCO website is the first stop for an up-to-date assessment of your chosen destination,” said Ms Hughes.
Recognising the increasing importance of safety, Wanderlust introduced a “Safest Country” category to its awards in 2001, which has been one by New Zealand two out of those three years. But Ms Hughes added that this doesn’t mean the country is boring, with activities like skiing, adrenaline sports, diving and trekking on offer as well as great food and wine.
Other winners in the awards were Namibia, which came out as top destination; Lonely Planet, which won best guide book series for the second year running; Sunvil Holidays, which won best tour operator and received an unprecedented 100% customer satisfaction rating; Singapore Airlines, which won best airline and Singapore Changi, best airport. Top low-cost airline was taken by Virgin Blue and top travel clothing and equipment brand by Rohan. For more details go to www.wanderlust.co.uk.
