See Custer's Trail on Vanishing Trails Expeditions

Wednesday, 25 April 20073 min read

The 9-day/8-night group program begins and ends in Bismarck and includes Fort Abraham Lincoln, Custer’s final posting, the Black Hills of South Dakota which the controversial Civil War hero opened to settlement with his discovery of gold and the site of his final battle in what is now southeastern Montana. Also included are six national parks and numerous Native American learning experiences. As in all Vanishing Trails Expeditions participants have several opportunities to interact with living history re-enactors and interpreters who enhance the learning experience and sense of adventure.

Dates for the expedition are July 7-16, 2007. Highlights include a dinner cruise on the Missouri River, six national parks (including Teddy Roosevelt Nat’l Park, Little Big Horn, Mount Rushmore and the Badlands), the Medora Musical, Crazy Horse Monument, jeep ride to the buffalo, Wall Drug, and Akta Lakota Museum.

The Vanishing Trails Expeditions honoring America’s westward expansion movement were introduced in 1993 with the Oregon Trail, and have grown to include the American Legacy, Lewis & Clark Trail, Teddy Roosevelt’s Dakota, Bleeding Kansas, Santa Fe Trail, Nez Perce Trail, Nevada’s Living Ghost Towns and Siouxland: the Dakota Conflict. These programs allow participants to experience first-hand the sites where the pivotal events of the history of the West actually took place. Several of these programs were designated official American Pathways 2000 itineraries by the United States Department of Commerce’s office of Tourism Industries.
