An investigation is under way unto the deadly India train fire which killed nine passengers.
It has been ascertained a group of passengers lit up their own gas stove to make hot drinks while the train was in a station overnight.
“I’ve taken statements from the passengers to know how the fire started and how it spread,” said regional commissioner of railway safety, A M Chowdhary.
It happened near Madurai.
A total of 55 passengers and eight crew were on the chartered train which was on a pilgrimage trip to the Meenakshi Amman temple.
The fire broke out at around 5.00am and spread quickly, officials said.
Chowdhary said the investigation could take up to a month.
Flammable gas containers are not permitted on trains.
