Shangri-La Colombo back in business after Easter bombing

Shangri-La Hotel, Colombo will partially open this week after a near-two month closure following a series of Easter suicide bombings.

It was one of the hotels targeted by bombers on April 21 and sustained extensive damage.

"From Wednesday June 12, 6 pm onwards, popular dining establishments including Sapphyr Lounge, Capital Bar & Grill and Kaema Sutra will reopen for service. Guests will be able to enjoy room stays and Chi, the Spa from Saturday June 15 onwards," said Mahika Chandrasena, director of public relations at Shangri-La, Colombo.

Two other hotels damaged in the attacks have reopened in recent weeks.

The company continues to support the communities impacted and marks the reopening with funds for continuing medical assistance, counselling, scholarships and vocational training.

"In memory of, and to honour, those that lost their lives on that day, the Shangri-La Group will be making an initial contribution to the Dialog Foundation," it said.

With the hotel back in business, it marks another milestone for Sri Lanka’s tourism recovery.

It is slowly getting back on its feet with some travel advisories relaxed and coordinated marketing campaigns offering deep discounts showing early signs of success in attracting tourists back to the country.
