Silk Road success
Media mart packed out with exotic new destinations buyers and media
The Silk Road Media Mart, held at the World Travel Market in London last week was packed out with journalists and tour operators queuing to meet representatives of some of the 26 Silk Road countries.
Unusually, members of the media had to elbow their way into the room to get to question the exotic destinations about their tourism initiatives and once there were loaded with delicious dried fruits and pastries.
For the first time at the World Travel Market, tour operators and media had the opportunity to meet with leading Silk Road destinations in a special networking event taking place on 10 November 2010.
The Silk Road Media Mart brought representatives from across Central Asia, Europe and the Middle East to showcase their most newsworthy stories in a special speed-networking event.
The World Tourism Organization (UNWTO) is working directly with over 25 countries to strengthen the Silk Road brand as a vehicle for sustainable tourism development across Europe, Eurasia, Asia/Pacific and the Middle East.
Current Silk Road countries include: Armenia, Azerbaijan, China, DPR Korea, Egypt, Georgia, Greece, Iran, Israel, Italy, Japan, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Mongolia, Pakistan, Republic of Korea, Russian Federation, Saudi Arabia, Syrian Arab Republic, Tajikistan, Turkey, Turkmenistan, Ukraine, Uzbekistan.
Between them they offer the full range of tourism activities from mountain activities to beach holidays – all with a heavy lacing of authenticity and deep culture.
This represented a substantial opportunity for specialist tour operators and mass-market operators alike.
The destinations are being marketed under a single brand, thought to be one of the strongest, and certainly one of the oldest and most evocative, in the world.
