Silly season hits Singapore this winter
You’d be forgiven for thinking Christmas had come early this year in Singapore, with the Lion City hosting festivals galore during the coming months. From a serious shopfest to a taste spectacular and an arts and entertainment extravaganza, forget the winter blues and fire up in sunny Singapore.
Just seven hours by plane from Australia’s east coast, Singapore averages temperatures in the high 20s all year around. But enjoying an endless summer is only one of the reasons to visit Singapore this winter.
“With a jam-packed calendar of events from June through to August, Singapore is an ideal way for Australians to beat the winter blues,” said Mr Kevin Leong, Regional Director Oceania, Singapore Tourism Board.
This year’s Great Singapore Sale kicked off on 26 May, and whether you adore a bargain or love designer wear it truly is not to be missed. Shopaholics from around the globe will flock to the Lion City between late May and 23 July for eight long weeks of massive markdowns, terrific competitions, and a vibrant party atmosphere.
If culture is what you crave, award-winning performers from around the world will converge upon Singapore during June for the 20th annual Singapore Arts Festival. This year, the packed programme really does offer something for everyone, from children’s entertainment to outdoor events, from free shows to classical music, from incredible contemporary dance to traditional Asian culture, with several shows staging their world premiere during the three-week spectacle from 1 – 25 June.
Most foodies know that July is Singapore’s feasting month with the Singapore Food Festival holding court from 1 – 31 July. Eating is one of life’s joys in Singapore, 24 hours a day, and during the July celebrations restaurants will be serving up the whole range of local cuisine to satisfy all palates – and budgets. From five-star dining to the traditional hawker markets, enjoy dishes such as the renowned Singapore Chilli Crab, spicy satays, and traditional Indian Roti Prata.
The carnival atmosphere continues into August, with a host of celebrations planned to mark Singapore’s National Day on 9 August, and throughout the month-long Celebrate Singapore festival.
