Silver Airways abruptly pulls out of Orlando

Regional airline Silver Airways left passengers in limbo at the weekend after abruptly canceling flights at Orlando without warning.

The airline is currently in bankruptcy protection and undergoing restructuring.

“We received notification that, effective immediately, all departing and arriving flights with Silver Airways are canceled,” said Angela Starke, Orlando Airport spokesperson.

It is thought the struggling airline was unable to reach an agreement to extend a contract at the airport, and has been hampered by the demands from one of its aircraft lessors.

“In addition to this last-minute financial demand, (lessor) TrueNoord ordered the immediate grounding of aircraft, giving us no chance to operate the flights our customers were relying on,” the airline said.

“We are working with our customers to rebook itineraries and minimize inconvenience for travelers..”

The airline is still operational and still flying to other destinations including Fort Lauderdale, Tampa and Puerto Rico.

“This decision will allow us to secure additional capital and undertake a financial restructuring that will strengthen our position as a competitive airline, ultimately benefiting valued customers,” the airline said of its restructuring, which began in December

In the December letter, Silver Airways said, “all tickets remain valid, and we will continue operating as usual.”

The airline is headquartered in Hollywood, Florida.
