Silversea plans two more ships
Silversea aims to expand in the luxury cruise sector with an order for a new ship and an option on a second.
The first 540-passenger ultra-luxury vessel is due for delivery at the end of 2009 after a memo of understanding was signed for construction by Italian shipyard Fincantieri.
The newbuild order is the first since contracts for the line’s Silver Shandow and Silver Wind in 1998. They entered service in 2000 and 2001.
The newbuild will see the line’s overall capacity rise by 40% from 1,356 berths to 1,896 berths. Silversea currently operates four ships.
Silversea president Amerigo Perasso said: “This newbuild order shows great confidence in the luxury segment’s potential for greater demand. Silversea will be well positioned to fully meet this future demand in North America and our international markets.”
