Singapore Air operates first SAF flights from Changi Airport
Singapore’s move to carbon-free aviation air travel progressed forward with the first blended sustainable aviation fuel powered flights by Singapore Airlines.
Low-cost subsidiary Scoot also flew on blended SAF from Changi Airport.
It marks the next phase of the Singapore pilot program led by the Civil Aviation Authority of Singapore and SIA Group.
Under the pilot, 1,000 tonnes of neat SAF will be supplied by Neste and blended with refined jet fuel at ExxonMobil’s facilities in Singapore.
This is expected to cut carbon dioxide emissions by 2,500 tonnes.
The pilot will provide insights on potential pricing structures for cost recovery and support policy considerations for SAF use.
From the fourth quarter of 2022, SIA customers will be able to buy a mix of SAF credits and carbon offsets, as part of the SIA Group Voluntary Carbon Offset Program.
SIA will also partner Climate Impact X (CIX), a global exchange for carbon credits, to introduce a bundled portfolio consisting of SAF credits and carbon credits.
Lee Wen Fen, Senior Vice President Corporate Planning, Singapore Airlines, said: “It marks an important milestone in the SIA Group’s decarbonisation journey. Sustainable aviation fuels are a key decarbonisation lever, and this demonstrates our commitment.”
