Singapore seeks public feedback over short term vacation rentals

The Singapore government will open a public consultation period to seek comments on the issues of short-term letting of apartments.

It comes just days after Singapore laid the first charges for illegal renting out of apartments since it released tough new regulations earlier this year.

Two men were charged under the Planning Act and could face fines of S$200,000 each.

However the government wants to strike a balance, especially as Singapore is one of Asia;s most expensive rental markets.

Planning agency the Urban Redevelopment Authority said public consultation ‘will involve working with key stakeholders such as representatives of home-sharing platforms, resident groups and other accommodation providers to ensure that the framework is robust and addresses the concerns of all parties, including residents and industry stakeholders.’

New rules issued by the URA means residents can only rent out their apartment for a minimum stay of three consecutive months.

That has been criticised as too draconian by home sharing giant Airbnb.

It is ‘untenable and does not reflect how Singaporeans travel or use their home today,’ Airbnb said in a statement.
