The Federal Aviation Administration has proposed two civil penalties amounting to more than $1 million on SkyWest Airlines for safety inspection violations.
The FAA wants to impose a $911,000 fine for the carrier’s failure to inspect cargo door skins on two jets.
The oversight went unchecked while SkyWest operated the two aircraft on 15,969 flights, the FAA alleges.
In a separate charge, the FAA has imposed a $320,000 fine after SkyWest failed to inspect main landing gear equipment on four planes at the required time.
These planes flew more than 6,700 times while inspections were overdue.
"We expect operators to comply fully with all FAA regulations and directives," a FAA statement said.
SkyWest will likely contest the fines.
"We are disappointed with the FAA’s proposed penalty," an airline spokesman said.
"SkyWest has worked with the FAA to ensure that our aircraft procedures and appropriate checks are conducted as outlined within our maintenance program. We are committed to ensuring every flight we operate is safe and we look forward to meeting with the FAA to review the claims in more detail."
